I am a PhD student and reasearch assistant in Statistical Machine Translation. My research focuses on improving state-of-the art SMT systems using syntactic information. I work on two projects funded by the DFG (See "Projects" for a detailed description).
I will defend my PhD early December. My thesis is about "Decoding strategies for syntax-based SMT".

We proposed a rule extraction procedure and modified the Moses Open Source Toolkit (Moses) to deal with long-distance reordering (up to 50 words) in hierarchical SMT. In another piece of work, we intergrated the high-speed classifier Vowpal Wabbit (VW) into the hierarchical and string-to-tree components of Moses. We used VW to train rule selection models for hierarchical and string-to-tree SMT. Our hierarchical rule selection model yielded to significant improvements in translation quality in French-English translation tasks.
- Tree Transducers in Machine Translation where I work with Andreas Maletti.
We investigate tree-based formalisms for SMT. We designed a composition algorithm for Extended Top-down Tree Transducers. We have implemented a training procedure and a decoder for shallow local multi-bottom-up tree transducers (Sh-l-MBOT) in Moses. Our Sh-l-MBOT based SMT system yielded significant improvements in translation quality in English-German, English-Arabic and English-Chinese translation tasks.
