Computational Linguistics Courses at IMS Stuttgart: Overview

Organization of studies regarding EMA

Topic fields of EMA in detail

First and second year top
The following table summarizes the regular Diplom-programme, years 1 and 2. Note that we suggest, for a compact three-year EMaLS path, to have some courses earlier than proposed in the regular four year organization of the studies; this only concerns courses which do not require prior initiation into other topics.

1. Sem. Introduction Computer Science I (6h) Logic, Formal Bases I (4h) Introduction Linguistics (2h) Software Laboratory (4h) Foreign Language (4h)
2. Sem. Introduction Computer Science II (6h) Semantics I (4h) Introduction Comptl. Linguistics (4h) Syntax I (4h) Foreign Language (2h)
3. Sem. Formalisms (4h) Logic, Formal Bases II (4h) Phonetics/ Phonology (4h) Syntax II (4h) Foreign Language (2h)
4. Sem. Software Laboratory II (4h) Statistical Methods (4h) Morphology (2h) Foreign Language (4h)

Third year top
5. Sem. Semantics II (4h) Parsing I (4h) Speech Synthesis (4h) Algorithmic Syntax (4h)
6. Sem. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Note: At the place of "etc." in the table above, 4 x 2h out of the following have to be chosen by the students:

  • Logic II
  • Pragmatics
  • Philosophy of Language
  • Computational Semantics
  • Machine Translation I
  • Signal Processing
  • Algorithms for Speech Processing
  • Speech Recognition I

Fourth year and latertop
  • Logic III
  • Syntax III
  • Semantics III
  • Parsing II
  • Generation
  • Inference Systems
  • Machine Translation II
  • Speech Recognition II
  • Speech Recognition III

Additional optional courses offered regularlytop
  • Syntax-Semantics Interface
  • Corpus-Based Linguistics
  • Lexical Processing for Machine Translation
  • Sentence and Discourse Prosody
  • Language and Brain

Degreetop
The Stuttgart courses in computational linguistics and speech processing lead to the degree of Diplom-Linguist(in), Dipl.-Ling. The degree is comparable with the Diplom-degrees in technical and engineering sciences (Dipl.-Ing., Dipl.-Inform., etc.), thus it can be considered of the same kind as a second degree in other countries.

There is no formal equivalent of the first degree in Stuttgart: students have to pass a mid-term examination (`Zwischenprüfung') after two years of studies (roughly equivalent to the first degree), but this does not lead to an officially recognized end-of-studies degree.

The examination board consists of the following:

  • Prof. Dr. phil. habil. Christian Rohrer
  • Prof. Dr. h.c. Hans Kamp, PhD
  • Prof. Dr. phil. habil. Grzegorz Dogil
  • PD Dr. phil. habil. Uwe Reyle
  • Apl. Prof. Dr. phil. habil. Rainer Bäuerle
