HS 4: Sprachsynthese I

WS 2000/2001, Möbius, Di 14.00 - 15.30 / 3.11 (Phonetiklabor)
sowie Kompaktseminar 16.-20.2.2001

Zielgruppe: Dipl.-Ling. ab 5. Sem. / Dipl.-Inf. Nebenfach / MA Linguistik

Note: This class is taught in English.

Speech synthesis is an essential component of any system relying on "natural" and intuitive human-machine communication. Speech synthesis systems are also used in phonetic research to gain further insight into speech production and acoustic properties of speech. This seminar offers an introduction to speech synthesis systems and strategies. Various approaches to speech synthesis are presented, including formant synthesis, concatenative synthesis, and corpus-based unit selection. Participants will carry out hands-on exercises and experiments using speech synthesis software available at the IMS (KPE, Festival). In the compact seminar the participants will build a speech synthesis system for a restricted application domain.
