Introduction

 The LexGram system implements a feature-based version of the Lambek categorial grammars (cf. [8], [9], [2]), which can be simultaneously considered as a lexicalized version of Pollard and Sag's [10] Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). The HPSG schemata are restricted to head-complement structures only, i.e. to functor-argument structures in categorial grammar terminology. The Subcategorization Principle corresponds to Functional Application, the Nonlocal-Feature Principle is the counterpart of the hypothetical reasoning mechanism of the Lambek calculus. The LexGram version of the Trace Principle admits only traces which are 'lexically licensed', i.e. the description of the trace is an element of the slash value of a complement. Due to this strict lexicalism, even the handling of head movement is unproblematic. An overview is given in [].

The LexGram system includes a parser and a generator. Both are chart-based. The parser and a German grammar are described in König 1994a [4]. A general description of the generator is given in König 1994b [5]. LexGram is as an add-on package of the CUF system by Dörre et al. [1]:

{\texteqlength}\begin{center}
\begin{tab...
 ...t c\vert}{C}
 \\  \hline\end{tabular}\end{center}\end{minipage}\end{displaymath} (1)

The following instructions refer to LexGram version 0.9.4, which runs under the SICStus version of CUF 2.3.1. Possibly, it will run on the Quintus version of CUF, as well. Since CUF and LexGram are still under development, you'd better check for updates of the systems and their documentations via the CUF WWW home page

"http://www.ims.uni-stuttgart.de/cuf/"
Note the license agreement, which is made available there.

Before going through the remainder of this manual, the reader should have acquired some basic knowledge of the CUF language, e.g. by having had a glance at [].

NOTE THAT THE GENERATOR HASN'T BEEN PORTED TO LEXGRAM0.9.4. So please, use LexGram0.9.3.
