ELSNET -- European Network of Excellence in Speech and Natural Language Processing

Partners: Over 40 research units and companies from all over Europe. Coordinated by the Centre for Cognitive Science at Edinburgh University.

Framework: Funded as a research network within ESPRIT Basic Research, by the DG III F of the Commission of the European Community, Brussels.

Description: The network is an infrastructural (``horizontal'') activity aiming at supporting scientific exchange between researchers and institutes active in the fields of speech processing and NLP. Emphasis is on interdisciplinary topics concerning the interaction between the two areas and their integration. Current activities aim at the creation of an adequate infrastructure for the exchange of scientists, the creation of sharable resources (grammars, lexicons, speech samples, corpora), as well as an intensification of the contacts with industry and with research funding organizations. ELSNET has proposed two research networks under the CEC's HCM programme (Human Capital and Mobility), one on phrase Level Phonology, another on Dialogue and Discourse.
