Project NameCooperation Project Verbmobil Phase II:"Multilingual, robust, and direct translation of spontaneous speech dialogs" AbstractVerbmobil is a long-term interdisciplinary Language Technology project. This speaker-independent system processes spontaneous speech. Developed for the domains of appointment negotiation, travel planning and hotel reserving, Verbmobil offers assistance in dialog situations. The joint initiative, in which information technology companies, universities, and research centers cooperate is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology (BMBF). Until the year 2000 115 million DM are allocated to the project. In addition industrial partners bring in 51 million DM. The project is controlled by the German Aerospace Research Establishment (DLR). The Verbmobil milestones are reviewed twice a year by an international advisory board. Duration of Phase 1: 1993 - 1996; Phase 2: 1997 - 2000.
IMS is responsible for a semantic-based translation approach. It
belongs to work package 3 "Machine Translation". The
transfer component takes as input the analysis of the linguistic
processing components developed in work package 2 and produces a
target language representation. This representation serves then as
input to the generation and synthesis modules for generating an
utterance which tries to preserve the major content of the source
language utterance.
