Conceptualisation and Coherence in the Linguistic Realisation of Dynamic EpisodesGeneral information:project funded by the German Research Community (DFG), March 2007 - December 2008 and March - July 2010
Project description:The main goal of this project is to model the processes of discourse production starting with a knowledge base down to the linguistic form of utterances, using the insights of psycholinguistic research in this area. The model will be based on the algorithms of formal dynamic semantics in the framework of Discourse Representation Theory (DRT). The special focus of this project is on the cross-linguistic differences (primarily, English vs. German) in narrative planning including event selection, linearisation and perspective taking. The typical English and German narrative solutions should by algorithmically derived from the discourse representation structure that encodes a limited knowledge domain (the content of a film), and compared to real narratives from a multilingual corpus of film retellings. We formulate detailed hypotheses about the form of the conceptual representation that serves as the starting point of the production process, as well as about the principles of discourse planning. Thus the project brings together the methods of psycholinguistics and formal dynamic semantics.
