What I am doing ...

I earn my living by working in the machine translation project Verbmobil, subproject "Translation". The main contents are designing and implementing the "IMS Transfer System" and an ADT package for several linguistic submodules of the Verbmobil translation system.

In February I finished my doctoral thesis "Semantic-based Transfer - Machine Translation on Sets of Linguistic Constraints" (in German, abstract in English) (gzipped, PostScript, 244 pages). It is on the design, the theory and the implementation of a semantic-based transfer approach based on sets of terms. Among others it contains a proof of the NP-completeness of the general transfer problem and a novel chart-based transfer approach.

During the last semesters I taught and co-taught sereral courses on computational linguistics (IMS local link), on the the dialog system "Verbmobil" (IMS local link), and on the programming language Prolog (IMS local link).
