Rethinking (the Annotation of) Anaphora and Information Structure

RAIS 2013

March 23 – 24, 2013

RAISThe last five years have witnessed an extraordinary improvement in the situation of corpus resources of substantial size annotated with anaphora, information status and information structure. The development was made possible thanks to the availability of custom-made annotation tools as well as the creation of new, linguistically sound annotation guidelines. The RAIS workshop is bringing together experts who have worked on relevant issues, from a theoretical-linguistic, an annotation-driven or a computational perspective. We want to take stock of the state of the art in three aspects of the empirical work on anaphora and information structure: (i.) schemes, (ii.) annotation tools, and (iii.) computational models.

Our hands-on workshop proceeds along the following lines: prior to the workshop, participants provide statements and example material on relevant issues, which they classify as (a.) solved, (b.) urgent, or (c.) to be solved in the future. From these statements, we compile a joint document.

At the workshop, an overview on the participants' statements is presented, plus a selection of talks on relevant issues. After that, a vote is held on three topics to be discussed in smaller groups. Finally, the results of the discussions are presented to the plenum.
