Annotating Emotional Language Data.
Universität Hamburg. Dezember 1999. 32 Seiten.
This paper addresses the question of how emotional language data (as they occurin the interaction with an automatic speech processing system) can be annotatedfor their emotionality. The problem consist in finding a methodology which a) avoids classification by means dubious categories, such as emotion terms, b) which builds on authentic material, and c) which does not rely on intuitive decisions.
The annotation developed here meets these requirements by being built on authentic Wizard-of-Oz dialogues which were recorded in a setting which allows to control for intrapersonal variation. The idea is that if speakers are exposed to identical system behaviour several times, their changes in linguistic behaviour can indicate their changing speaker attitude towards the system; thus if the speaker reacts differently although the situation is constant and the sequences of system output are the same, the differences can be attributed to a change in attitude towards the system and to emotional involvement.
By showing step by step how particular linguistic properties are correlated with certain phases in the dialogues, they can be determined as relevant for the classification of utterances as emotional. The annotation resulting consists of prosodic, conversational, and lexical means, and it avoids the methodological problems described above.

X-Vario - an FST calculus for the Generation of Speech Variants.
Universität Bielefeld. August 1999. 61 Seiten.
The present paper presents an implementation of X-XVario, a system for the generation of Speech Variants based on an FST-calculus. When working with automaticspeech recognition, one has to do with the high degree of phonetic variability exibited by continous speech. The mapping of the speech signal onto a sequence of lexical representations gets very complicated without additional information about possible variants of the canonical form, which can be found in pronounciation dictionaries. In the present paper a specific implementation of a given knowledge base will be presented, as well as its application to the {\it Bielefeld Lexical Database}, generating a set of speech variants for the existing lexicon. IN the present implementation, the rules were implemented by means of an FST-calculus. The present implementation was performed with the XFST-system for efficiency reasons. The internal architecture of the system is dicussed, and the definition of the rules is presented.

Getypte Merkmalstrukturen und Unifikation zur Verarbeitung temporaler Ausdrücke in Verbmobil.
Technische Universität Berlin. Februar 1999. 72 Seiten.

Tracking and understanding temporal descriptions in dialogue.
Technische Universität Berlin. Oktober 1998. 14 Seiten.
The Verbmobil system provides speech-to-speech translations for appointment scheduling dialogues, where two partners seek a date that suits both. The `context-evaluation' module of Verbmobil monitors this negotiation by tracking and comparing the temporal descriptions in a two-step manner: first, the temporal expressions of an utterance are mapped to a shallow representation language ``ZeitGram''; these terms are then given a semantic interpretation as ``interval descriptions'' (IDs). In this paper, we describe both representation levels and the mapping between them. We sketch the inferences implemented on the ID level and illustrate their application in Verbmobil's context evaluation.

Detection and Transcription of Out-Of-Vocabulary Words in Continuous-Speech Recognition.
Daimler-Benz AG. August 1998. 185 Seiten.
This thesis deals with the problem of Out-Of-Vocabulary words in speech recognition. The standard response of speech recognition systems whenever they encounter such OOV words is to (silently) misrecognize them without issuing any warning to the user. In order to avoid this undesired behaviour, two different strategies are proposed.
The first strategy consists in preventing the problem, i.e. the occurrence of OOV words, and this thesis presents two ways of doing that. First, the system vocabulary is optimized using information extracted from other corpora and application domains, such that the number of expected OOV words be minimized. Using this method, the vocabulary coverage was significantly improved, especially forsmall vocabularies. The second method of reducing the number of OOV words consists of redefining the concept of ``word'' based on morphological considerations. In particular, compound words are decomposed into their constituent parts, which are used as the lexical recognition units, and then the parts are rejoined to compounds. These units reduce the vocabulary size as well as the OOV rate, and improve the recognition performance at the same time.
The second strategy consists in adapting the system to the occurrence of OOV words. This is done by incorporating explicit knowledge of OOV words into the system models. The acoustic model is complemented with additional garbage models for OOV words. The language model is especially tuned to detecting OOV words. When OOV words occur in the language-model training material, the context of OOV words can be explicitly modeled, and the system accuracy can be significantlyimproved by using models for OOV words. When all words in the training are included in the vocabulary, however, OOV words will not occur in the training material. In order to be able to train a language model for OOV words in this situation, we introduced a method dubbed iterative substitution, which simulates theoccurrence of OOV words in the language-model training material. This method also produced positive experimental results.
The next step after identifying OOV words as such is to identify new words which occur more than once. For this, the recognition system has to update its models to incorporate the new words in question, and a phonetic transcription of the new words has to be found. A method dubbed the cheap transcription algorithm is presented, which uses information extracted directly from the word-based search to compute the phonetic transcription.
Since the phonetic representation of the input is available as a by-product of the recognition, little additional computation is required for the phonetic transcription. Experiments showed that the phonetic transcriptions obtained using the cheap transcription algorithm are almost as accurate as those obtained witha phoneme recognizer at a much higher cost.

Making the Most of Multiplicity: A Multi-Parser Multi-Strategy Architecture for the Robust Processing of Spoken Language.
Siemens AG, Universität des Saarlandes, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
August 1998. 11 Seiten.
This paper describes ongoing research on robust spoken language understanding in the context of the Verbmobil speech-to-speech machine translation project. Wefocus on recent developments in the processing steps which map a word lattice to a semantic representations. The approach described firstly applies speech repair correction to word lattices. Four analysis methods of varying depth are then applied in parallel to the normalized word lattices, producing output for sub-portions of the lattice in the same semantic description language, the VIT format. These fragmentary analyses are stored and combined by a further processingcomponent, which finally selects a sequence of semantic representations as a result.

Using Templates to Encode Transfer Rules.
IMS Universität Stuttgart. August 1998. 75 Seiten.
Transfer in Verbmobil is chiefly semantic-based. It transforms source into target language semantic representations by applying context sensitive transfer rules. Since the semantic representations abstract away from language-specific morpho-syntactic peculiarities, they allow the transfer rules to be specified in a rather compact way. However, the complexity of the semantic representation language used in Verbmobil poses certain difficulties to the rule writer if the source structure cannot be preserved in the target language.
To simplify the writing of transfer rules and to cope with classes of translation patterns in a systematic way, templates for transfer rules have been developed. Templates turned out to be also advantageous in the way they allow systematic adaptation of changes in the semantic representations.
This report outlines the architecture of the transfer module, provides the definitions of templates and illustrates their usage with examples. It also presents the types of contextual restrictions used for disambiguation and gives an overview of the translation patterns that occur in the Verbmobil domain.

How to label accent position in spontaneous speech automatically with the help of syntactic--prosodic boundary labels.
Lehrstuhl für Mustererkennung 5, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
August 1998. 42 Seiten.
In this paper, we describe an approach that allows us to annotate accent position in German spontaneous speech with the help of syntactic--prosodic phrase boundary labels (the so--called M labels). The data are taken from the Verbmobil--corpus. Two factors are mainly relevant for such a rule--based assignment of accent to a word in a phrase: the part--of--speech of this word, and the position of this word in the phrase. Acoustic--perceptual accent labels are classifiedwith a Multi--Layer--Perceptron, with a Language Model, and with a combination of bothprocedures. By taking into account rule--based generated accent labels, we could improve classification results by 2\%, from 80\% zu 82\%. Best classification results could be obtained for the rule--based labels (88\%) themslves Verbmobil-Report 228.

Dialogue Acts in VERBMOBIL-2 -- Second Edition.
DFKI GmbH. Juli 1998. 103 Seiten.
This report describes the dialogue phases and the second edition of dialogue acts which are used in the second phase of VERBMOBIL.
While in the first p roject phase the scenario was restricted to appointment scheduling dialogues, it has been extended to travel planning in the second phase with appointment scheduling being only a part of the new scenario.
We updated and improved the set of dialogue acts used to describe the dialoguesin the travel planning scenario. The set differs from the first edition mainly in its overall structure and in some additions. Most of the actual dialogue acts are exactly as defined in in the first edition of this report (VM-Report 204,June 1997).

A Model for Robust Processing of Spontaneous Speech by Integrating Viable Fragments.
Universität des Saarlandes, Computerlinguistik. Mai 1998. 11 Seiten.
We describe the design and function of a robust processing component which is being developed for the Verbmobil speech translation system. Its task consists of collecting partial analyses of an input utterance produced by three parsers and attempting to combine them into more meaningful larger units. It is used as a fallback mechanism in cases where no complete analysis spanning the whole input can be achieved, owing to spontaneous speech phenomena or speech recognitionerrors.

Japanese possesses a variety of different particles that occur after the phrases they mark. They are quite distinct in their functions, but share some syntactic similarities. This is a lexical solution that also resolves the problem of cooccurrence of particles.

Prosodische Information: Begriffsbestimmung und Nutzen für das Sprachverstehen.
Lehrstuhl für Mustererkennung 5, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. September 1997. 16 Seiten.

Integrated Dialog Act Segmentation and Classification using Prosodic Features and Language Models.
Lehrstuhl für Mustererkennung 5, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
September 1997. 4 Seiten.
This paper presents an integrated approach for the segmentation and classification of dialog acts (DA) in the Verbmobil project. In Verbmobil it is often sufficient to recognize the sequence of DAs occurring during a dialog betweenthe two partners. In our previous work we segmented and classified a dialog in two steps: first we calculated hypotheses for the segment boundariesand decided for a boundary if the probabilities exceeded a predefined thresholdlevel. Second we classifiedthe segments into DAs using semantic classification trees or stochastic language models. In our new approach we integrate the segmentation and classification in the A*-algorithm to search for the optimal segmentation and classification of DAs on the basis of word hypotheses graphs (WHGs). The hypotheses for the segment boundaries are calculated with the help of astochastic language model operating on the word chain and a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) classifying prosodic features.
The DA classification is done using a category based language model for each DA. For our experiments we used data from the Verbmobil-corpus.

A Frame and Segment based Approach for Topic Spotting.
Lehrstuhl für Mustererkennung 5, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
September 1997. 4 Seiten.
In this paper we present a new approach for topic spotting based on subword units (phonemes and feature vectors) instead of words. Classification of topics isdone by running topic dependent polygram language models over these symbol sequences and deciding for the one with the best score. We trained and tested the two methods on three different corpora. The first is a part of a media corpus which contains data from TV shows for three different topics (IDS), the second ispart of the Switchboard corpus, the third is a collection of human machine dialogs about train timetable information (EVAR corpus). The results on Switchboardare compared with phoneme based approaches which were made at CRIM (Montr\'eal)and DRA (Malvern) and are presented as ROC curves; the results on IDS and EVAR are compared with a word based approach and presented as confusion tables. We show that a surprisingly little amount of recognition accuracy is lost when going from wordto subword based topic spotting.

Tempo and its Change in Spontaneous Speech.
Lehrstuhl für Mustererkennung 5, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
September 1997. 4 Seiten.
In this paper, we give a first account of speech tempo and its change in spontaneous speech in a very large data base (Verbmobil, i.e., human-human appointment dialogs). As features representing speech tempo, we computed mean normalized speech duration (speaking rate) and normalized phone duration in different ways. The importance of these features is evaluated with an automatic classification of boundaries and accents where different sets of prosodic features (including also information about F0, energy, pause, etc.) were used. The best results (83% for accents, 88% for boundaries, two classes each) could be achieved when all features were used. For the 2nd issue change of tempo was labelled manually. We present the characterizing feature values for changes from slow to fast and from fast to slow, as well as the results of an automatic classification of change of tempo (72% for three classes). Finally, we discuss the possible function of change of tempo and its use in automatic speech processing.

Can We Tell apart Intonation from Prosody (if we look at Accents
and Boundaries)?
Lehrstuhl für Mustererkennung 5, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
September 1997. 4 Seiten.
Studies on prosody/intonation normally look for important (distinctive) features denoting linguistic contrasts in production or perception experiments. The recent development in automatic speech processing and the availability of large speech data bases made it possible to have a fresh look at these topics. In our study, we classify automatically accent and boundary positions in a spontaneousspeech corpus with a large feature vector comprising as many relevant prosodic features as possible. The results obtained for different subsets of prosodic features (F0, duration, energy, etc.) show that each feature class contributes to the marking of accents and boundaries, and that the best results can be achieved by simply using all feature subsets together. Finally, we discuss possible conclusions for prosodic theory and for the application of prosody in speech processing.

Klassifikation von Sprechstilen mit linguistischem Wissen.
Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, IMMD 8.
Februar 1998. 76 Seiten.

As the input is unplanned spoken language, it contains certain {\em traces of the effort to formulate the utterances} (such as false starts, filled pauses, self-repairs or repetitions). In an adequate translation, these traces are obviously to be eliminated. I introduce a pragmatic-based approach to Automatic Dialogue Interpreting that handles these traces adequately. This approach is characterized by the fact that {\em dialogue acts} representing both the propositionalcontent and the communicative intention of an utterance are used as a translation invariant.

Collaboration in Automatic Dialogue Interpreting.
Technische Universität Berlin. August 1997. 6 Seiten.
This paper starts from the assumption that collaboration is a fundamental prerequisite of dialogues. This view is applied to a special instance of human-humandialogues that are mediated by an interpreter. I demonstrate how this situationdiffers from a normal human-human-dialogue situation: The responsibility for mutual understanding and the control over the dialogue lies with the interpreter. The paper then focuses on the question how a human-human dialogue mediated (i.e.\ interpreted) by a machine can be adequately modeled. Based on the assumption that the machine cannot bear the responsibility for understanding, I proposecertain strategies to compensate for the machine's incapability to take the control.

Improving Parsing of Spontaneous Speech with the Help of Prosodic Boundaries.
Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. August 1997. 4 Seiten.
Parsing can be improved in automatic speech understanding if prosodic boundary marking is taken into account, because syntactic boundaries are often marked byprosodic means.
Because large databases are needed for the training of statistical models for prosodic boundaries, we developed a labeling scheme for syntactic--prosodic boundaries within the German {\verbmobil} project (automatic speech--to--speechtranslation). We compare the results of classifiers (multi--layer perceptrons and language models) trained on these syntactic--prosodic boundary labels with classifiers trained on perceptual--prosodic and purely syntactic labels. Recognitionrates of up to 96\% were achieved. The turns that we need to parse consist of 20 words on the average and frequently contain sequences of partial sentence equivalents due to restarts, ellipsis, etc. For this material, the boundary scores computed by our classifiers can successfully be integrated into the syntacticparsing of word graphs;currently, they improve the parse time by 92\% and reduce the number of parse trees by 96\%. This is achieved by introducing a special {\bf P}rosodic {\bf S}yntactic {\bf C}lause {\bf B}oundary symbol ({\tt PSCB}) into our grammar and guiding the search for the best word chain with the prosodic boundary scores.

Prosodic Processing and its Use in Verbmobil.
Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. August 1997. 4 Seiten.
We present the prosody module of the {verbmobil} speech--to--speech translationsystem, the world wide first complete system, which successfully uses prosodic information in the linguistic analysis. This is achieved by computing probabilities for clause boundaries, accentuation, and different types of sentence mood for each of the word hypotheses computed by the word recognizer. These probabilities guide the search of the linguistic analysis. Disambiguation is already achieved during the analysis and not by a prosodic verification of different linguistic hypotheses. So far, the most useful prosodic information is provided by clause boundaries. These are detected with a recognition rate of 94\%. For the parsing of word hypotheses graphs, the use of clause boundary probabilities yields a speed--up of 92\% and a 96\% reduction of alternative readings.

Topic Spotting Using Subword Units.
Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. März 1997. 5 Seiten.
In this paper we present a new approach for topic spotting based on subword units and feature vectors instead of words. In our first approach, we only use vector quantized feature vectors and polygram language models for topic representation. In the second approach, we use phonemes instead of the vector quantized feature vectors and model the topics again using polygram language models. We trained and tested the two methods on two different corpora. The first is a part of a media corpus which contains data from TV shows for three different topics. The second is the Verbmobil-corpus where we used 18 dialog acts as topics. Eachcorpus was splitted into disjunctive test and training sets. We achieved recognition rates up to 82% for the three topics of the media corpus and up to 64% using 18 dialog acts of the Verbmobil-corpus as topics.

Semantic-Head Based Resolution of Scopal Ambiguities.
Universität des Saarlandes. Mai 1997. 12 Seiten.
We present an algorithm for scope resolution in underspecified semantic representations. Scope preferences are suggested on the basis of semantic argument structure. The major novelty of this approach is that, on the one side, we maintain an (with respect to scopal ambiguities) underspecified semantic representation, and on the other side, at the same time suggest a scope resolution possibility. The algorithm is evaluated on four ``real-life'' dialogues and fares surprisingly well: about 80% of the utterances containing scopal ambiguities are correctly interpreted by the suggested resolution.

Evaluating a Scheme for Dialogue Annotation.

This paper describes the evaluation of a coding scheme for the segmentation and annotation of transliterated spoken dialogues with dialogue act information. Using the kappa method for measuring the reliability of this coding scheme we find that both for segmentation and labeling we receive reliable results. Itis shown that this observation holds both for an evaluation of intercoderreliability and for the stability of coding by one coder over time. Our studies also suggest some improvements of our coding scheme which will be incorporated into the scheme for future use.

SCREEN: Learning a Flat Syntactic and Semantic Spoken Language Analysis Using Artificial Neural Networks.
Universität Hamburg. März 1997. 63 Seiten.
We describe a screening approach for learning robust processing of spontaneously spoken language. A screening approach is a flat analysis which uses shallowsequences of category representations for analyzing an utterance at various syntactic, semantic and dialog levels. Rather than using a deeply structured symbolic analysis, we use a flat connectionist analysis. This screening approach aims at supporting speech and language processing by using (1) data-driven learning and (2) robustness of connectionist networks.

What's in a Word Graph? Evaluation and Enhancement of Word Lattices.

We argue, that the number of derivation steps a theoratical parser would need to process all unique sub-paths in a graph could provide a meassure that is bothapplication oriented enough to be meaningful and general enough to allow a useful comparison of word recognisers across different applications. The paper discusses various meassures that are used, or could be used, to meassure word graph quality. Using real-life data (word graphs evaluated in the 1996 Verbmobil accoustic evaluation), it is demonstrated how different meassures can affect evaluation results. Finally, some algorithms are presented that can significantly improve word graph quality with respect to specific quality meassures.

Generalised DATR for flexible lexical access: Prolog specification.
Universität Bielefeld. Oktober 1993. 50 Seiten.
This report discusses criteria for a computational lexicon with flexible accessstrategies. and specifies a new generalised. constrain-oriented query-languagefor DATR lexica (EDQL) wich meets these requirements. A specification. The Open DATR Engine (ODE) is descibed. The implementation is in SicstusProlog. The approach to integrated lexica is illustrated with a "microlexicon" containing elementary semantic and surface lexical information. The ODE conceptis intended asa general specification for spoken language lexicon acquisition and applicationresearch in the VERBMOBIL project.
(Work Packages 5.1 and 5.9); it is not a specification for the VERBMOBIL lexicon system.)
