Assoziationen werden gesammelt, indem den Teilnehmern in einem Experiment Zielobjekte präsentiert werden. Die Teilnehmer sollen möglichst spontan Assoziationen nennen, also Wörter, die spontan in den Kopf kommen. Die Quantifizierung der Ziel-Assoziations-Paare heißt Assoziationsnorm.

Beispiel: Die häufigsten Assoziationen zu dem deutschen Verb klagen waren Gericht, weinen, jammern, Richter, Leid etc.

Wir haben eine Reihe von Web-Experimenten zum Sammeln von Assoziationsnormen durchgeführt.
